‘Extend recruitment age to 35’

Job seekers yesterday demand extending the recruitment age for government employment by five years to 35.

The current age limit for entering government jobs is 30 years for general applicants.

One of the protestors, Shakhawat Hossain claimed that in the current education system, a student lost about four years from SSC examinations to MA results. Protestors were heard shouting: “Return our four years or extend recruitment age to 35”.

According to the Public Service Commission, a person needs to be at least 18-year-old to apply for government jobs.

Supporters of Bangladesh General Students’ Parishad claimed the entry age was up to 40 in India, 45 in Sri Lanka and Indonesia, 59 in USA and Canada, 35 in Italy, Qatar and Taiwan.

They blocked the Shahbagh intersection yesterday afternoon, disrupting traffic for about an hour before police intervened. Police detained the parishad’s president Md Imtiaz Hossain and general secretary Nuruzzaman Chandan but released them later.
