RU professor Dr Abu Naser dies

Dr Abu Naser, professor at the statistics department in Rajshahi University, passed away yesterday morning. He was 62.

Naser was also the president of the Communist Party of Bangladesh’s Rajshahi district unit.

Students and teachers alike at RU are in mourning since news broke out about the well-loved teacher’s passing, sources told the Dhaka Tribune.

Dr Rezaul Karim, Naser’s colleague in the statistics department, said the veteran teacher did not have any classes scheduled yesterday but he went to the campus to attend a departmental meeting.

“He was locking up his office to go to the meeting at 11:30am when he collapsed. With the help of some students and teachers, we took him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where the doctors pronounced him dead,” he said.

Doctors said Naser died from a brain stroke, he added.

His body will be taken to his native home in Bagerhat district for burial, sources close to the family said.

Dr Naser joined Rajshahi University in the statistics department in 1985 after graduating from Jahangirnagar University.

He is survived by his wife and only daughter.
