The location of MV Robin which sank in the Meghna River on Tuesday morning with 50 passengers has not been identified even after two days.
Members of Bangladesh Navy, Coast Guard and fire firefighters have been trying to salvage the vessel. Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Haimchar SM Sarowar Kamal said they would continue rescue operation until the missing people and the launch were rescued.
Iqbal Hossain, station master of Chandpur Fire Service, told the Dhaka Tribune that the search operation was being hampered because of strong current in the Padma River.
Police said at least five persons, including a child, went missing on Tuesday after a trawler carrying about 50 passengers sank in the river.
Locals claimed that at least 15 others were still missing, but police said about 45 passengers were rescued shortly after ‘MV Robin’ capsized in the river. But local administration said they were not sure how many were unaccounted.
During a visit to Haimchar, this correspondent found that many people were waiting on the bank of the river to receive bodies of their beloved ones.
Shahalam who was waiting on the river bank said: “My daughter and wife are still missing. I have a request to local administration that they would give me the opportunity to buried their bodies, nothing else.”
‘MV Robin’ sank in the morning after being hit by a cargo vessel. A passing trawler and local fishermen were rescued about 45 passengers of the sunken vessel, police said.
