Statistics: One woman gives birth to 2.3 children

Every able woman in the country currently gives birth to 2.3 children compared to 6.3 in 1975 indicating gradual success of the population planning campaign, according to an education ministry document released recently.

"Bangladesh achieved a remarkable success in reproductive health, sanitation and family planning at present due to mass awareness campaign and expansion of education," education minister Nurul Islam Nahid told BSS Friday referring to the document.

He, however, said the statistics was mentioned in the document with reference to Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey which suggested the figure to be 4.3% in 1991 and 2.3% in 2014.

The ministry recently released the document titled "Egiye Jachhey Bangladesh".

Nahid said people are now free from superstition and could better understand the difference between "good and bad".

Terming growing government investment for education started yielding the benefits and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government deserved the credit.

According to the survey conducted in 2014, he said the contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR) currently stood at 62 percent which was 7.7% in 1972.
