Fire at Kalyanpur slum 

A fire has broken out at a slum in Kalyanpur area in Dhaka, a day after the Housing and Building Research Institute officials conducted eviction drive at the slum. Fire broke out at the slum, locally known as Pora Bosti, around 9:55am Friday. Four units from the fire service went to the spot and doused the blaze around 12:15pm.

35th BCS viva exams to begin January 31 

The viva examination of 35th BCS will be started from January 31. A notice given in Bangladesh Public Service Commission's website confirmed the date on Thursday. The notice said the exam will begin on January 31 and will continue till March 3.

Bangladeshis among 4 ejected from US flight for Muslim appearance 

A flight attendant kicked four men, including two Bangladeshi nationals, off a recent Toronto-to-New York flight for looking too Muslim. The four — Faimul Alam and another flier, whose identity could not be confirmed, are Bangladeshi Muslims, one is an Arab Muslim and Shah Anand a Sikh from India — were all ordered off the flight.

France to keep state of emergency 'until IS defeated' 

France will seek to keep its state of emergency until a "total and global war" against so-called Islamic State (IS) is over, Prime Minister Manuel Valls has told the BBC. The measures were introduced after the IS-led Paris attacks on 13 November and then extended for three months.

Litvinenko report accused of being nonsense 

A man named by a public inquiry as being one of the killers of ex-Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko has branded the report's conclusions "nonsense". Andrei Lugovoi said the inquiry presented "invention" and "supposition" and its chairman had "gone mad".
