‘UK to work for strengthening democracy’

The United Kingdom wants to work with all the institutions with Bangladesh so that democracy flourishes in the country, UK envoy Alison Blake has said.

Newly appointed British High Commissioner Alison Blake at a press conference Wednesday said they are here to work with the government, parliament and all political parties for a prosperous democracy.

Blake came to Dhaka last week and submitted her credential before President Abdul Hamid on Tuesday.

Blake said both countries have parliamentary democracies and London had expressed concerns in conducting elections here.

She said the recent local election was held more peacefully than past and as the opposition parties were able to participate.

“We will continue to support Bangladesh to carry participatory, free and fair elections at all level,” she added.

The high commissioner said her main priority was to work with everybody here to build a bright future for Bangladesh and for the UK.
