Police: Narayanganj five-murder probe progress satisfactory

Police yesterday claimed to have made headway in their investigation into the killing of five members of a family.

“We have come across important information but we will need a little more time to crack the case,” Narayanganj police chief Khandaker Mohiduddin told reporters but declined to divulge further information.

Police on Saturday recovered bodies of Taslima, 35, her daughter Sumaiya, 7, son Shanto, 10, brother Mosharraf alias Morshed, 20, and sister-in-law Lamia, 20, from their rented flat at the sadar upazila’s Baburail.

Taslima’s husband Shafiqul Islam filed a case with the sadar police the next day, which was shifted to the Detective Branch on Sunday night.

A police source said they were focusing on the family’s financial transactions and internal feud to determine the reason behind the murders.

Police’s Deputy Inspector General Mahfuzul Hoque Nuruzzaman on Sunday said primary investigation suggested that the killers were known to the victims.

Taslima had borrowed Tk12 lakh from Najma Akhtar and Shahjahan of Kalabagan.

The duo reportedly threatened her after she had skipped monthly installments. Police detained them yesterday. Plaintiff Shafiqul said his brother-in-law Mosharraf had also borrowed money from local loan sharks and often had altercations with the lenders.

Seven others, including Shafiqul’s nephew Mahfuz, were detained for questioning on Sunday. Mahfuz was implicated in the murder case yesterday. A Narayanganj court gave police seven days to interrogate him.
