Junior Tigers sweep Windies in one-dayers

Following two convincing losses on the trot, the West Indies Under-19 team put up some sort of resistance but it was still not enough as they suffered a 16-run defeat against their Bangladeshi counterparts Saturday in the third and final one-dayer at Chittagong's Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.

The junior Tigers thumped the Windies youngsters by eight wickets and 171 runs in the first and second one-dayers respectively and even though the visitors tried their best to chase down 236, they still fell short, thus handing the hosts a 3-0 series sweep.

Off-spinner Sanjit Saha was the wrecker in chief for the home side, registering miserly bowling figures of 5/21 from his quota of 10 overs, and was ably supported by Ariful Islam, Saeed Sarkar, Abdul Halim and skipper Mehedi Hasan Miraz, who all bagged a wicket each.

Windies opening batsman Gidron Pope made a quickfire 48-ball 57, featuring 11 fours and a six, while middle-order batter Keacy Carty scored a painstaking 79-ball 42 but the fall of regular wickets at the fag end of their innings saw them eventually concede the whitewash.

Earlier, Mehedi's decision to take first guard paid off rich dividends as the junior Tigers posted 235 for the loss of seven wickets with opener Saif Hasan top-scoring with an unbeaten 147-ball 107, his knock studded with 11 boundaries and three sixes.

Shafiul Hayat provided valuable support, making 61 off 69 balls with the help of nine fours.

Pope, Kirstan Kallicharan and Odean Smith shared six wickets between themselves.

Bangladesh U-19 will now turn their attention to the two upcoming warm-up matches against Zimbabwe U-19 and England U-19, scheduled for this Saturday and next Monday, before embarking on their ICC U-19 World Cup journey at home.

The 11th edition of the U-19 World Cup is scheduled to get underway on January 27.
