Two schoolgirls have been killed when two separate buses ran them over in the capital on Tuesday.

The deceased are Sonia Akhter Sonali, a class-IX student of Rahima Adarsha High School in Segunbagicha and Khadiza Sultana Mitu, a class V student of Rokkhonpur High School in Comilla.

Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police outpost In-charge Muzammel Haque confirmed the Dhaka Tribune about the deaths.

According to family members, a bus used to ply on Gabtoli-Sayedabad road knocked down Sonia in the capital's High Court area around 8:15am Saturday while she was crossing the road.

Following the accident, the agitated students of the school blocked the road for half an hour, said police sources.

Later, Shahbagh police rushed to the spot and put off the barricade.

Another bus of Gulistan-Gabtoli route ran Mitu over in front of Dhaka Shishu Park around 3:30pm while she was crossing the road with her sister and brother-in-law.

Critically injured Mitu was rushed to the DMCH where doctors declared her dead.

Following the incident, angry locals captured the bus driver and gave a good beating, leaving him injured.

The injured bus driver has been admitted to the DMCH, said police.
