Shakib: Self competition will raise team standard

Bangladesh vice-captain Shakib al Hasan believes that concentrating on their combination and individual performances rather than thinking of the external factors will help them achieve positive results.

The left-arm all-rounder made the comment yesterday after he was asked if the pitch at Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium (SANS) is of concern given its record of keeping low and unfriendly. The four-match T20 series against Zimbabwe begins on Friday.

“The wicket will keep low or high should not matter to the team. What the team should think of is to have the best possible combination and to cope with all kind of conditions. You see its better to score 150 and win the game rather than scoring 200 and losing.

“We need performance along with experience to get positive results. Individual performance is important as it eventually aids the team,” said Shakib following the Tigers’ practice session at SANS yesterday.

“Everyone is highly motivated at the moment given the teams performances recently. The only thing needed to be done now is improve individual performances and prepare well for the coming days. Tendency to do better should be there and I think everyone is following the theory.

“Cristiano Ronaldo or Messi is a big star today because they have competed against their individual performances and only thought of raising their individual performance,” Shakib explained.
