Radio software likely to be installed in every vehicle

The government is planning to revise radio frequency regulations in order for every motor vehicle to mandatorily install a new radio software.

A source in the Posts and Telecommunications Division said the plan came as per the recommendations of Private Radio Owners Association of Bangladesh (PROAB) at a meeting yesterday.

The new move will help everybody listen to radio programmes easily, added the source.

The Ministry of Roads and Highways officials also participated in the meeting.

On December 30, Radio Owners Association informed Posts and Telecommunication Division that of 28 private radio stations, only four are enjoying below 90.0 MHz frequency and the rest between 90.4 MHz and 108.0 MHz.

Unfortunately, 80% vehicles have no radio software to enjoy the frequency between 90.4 MHz and 108.0. If the government implements the new regulation, revenue loss of radio stations would be reduced.

A total TK324 crore is needed for radio station owners to set up multiple frequency antennas. If the telecom division approves joint investment, radio owners would be able to save TK114 crore, said PROAB President Md Harun-Ur-Rashid.

The association also demanded that the Telecom Ministry set the spectrum price at Tk2.30 lakh for per station instead of Tk23 lakh for running their stations.
