Relief and Disaster Management Ministry has identified 72,000 buildings in Dhaka at risk to earthquakes.
Relief and Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya made the statement at a press briefing in Dhaka yesterday afternoon.
He said: “We had put black and red marks on the 72,000 buildings in Dhaka which were identified to be at risk during earthquake.
“We submitted a report to the Housing and Public Works Ministry and asked them to take initiative regarding the demolition of the risky buildings but they did not do anything regarding the matter.”
The minister said they would again ask the Housing and Public Works Ministry to take initiative for the demolition of the buildings.
Three people were killed and 32 others injured during the earthquake that jolted the country.
Besides, a six-storey building has tilted after the tremor at Shonir Akhra in Dhaka.
According to the USGS, the epicentre of the 6.7 magnitude earthquake was monitored at 351km east-northeast of Dhaka and 33km northwest of Imphal, the capital of India’s Manipur state.
