3 buildings tilt in Dhaka

Three residential buildings have tilted in separate areas of Old Dhaka after a 6.7 Manipur earthquake rattled Bangladesh at dawn on Monday.

One of the tilted buildings is located at City Corporation Sweeper Colony in Bangshal Road. A four-inch crack was developed in the six-storied building, said Abdul Halim, Deputy Director of Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence.

“Fire servicemen informed of the crack to the RAJUK. They will take next course of action after visiting the spot,” he said.

Nearly 50-60 families have been living in the building constructed three years ago, he further said.

Another building, holding number 62, located in Shakhari Bazar has halted after the Monday’s strong quake, said Kotwali OC Abul Hasan.

A crack was also created in the building due to jolting, he said.

Earlier, the building was declared risky by the RAJUK. As it is marked as heritage building, so the owner did not reconstruct it, the police official said.

A six-storey building tilted after the earthquake at Shonir Akhra.

Fire Service Headquarters Duty Officer Ataur Rahman said: “The building has residents up to the third floor while the other three floors are under-construction. The residents have been evacuated from the building.”

He added that RAJUK and Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence asked the four families living in the building to leave it.
