4 killed in earthquake, buildings tilt in Dhaka

Four people have been killed and 32 others injured during the earthquake that jolted the country.

Besides, three residential buildings have tilted in Bangshal Road, Shakhari Bazar and Shonir Akhra in Dhaka after the earthquake. 

The deceased are Atikur Rahman, 23, of Jurain, Kholilur Rahman, main cook of Rajshahi University's Bangabandhu Hall, Sona Mia, 38, of Jamalpur's Islampur, and grocer Nur Islam Kundu, of Lalmonirhar.

Atikur fell sick while getting out of his residence in a hurry when the earthquake struck around 5:05am Monday.

Later, he was declared dead when taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 5:45am.

Residential Surgeon of DMCH emergency unit Riaz Morshed said: “He might have died of a cardiac arrest caused out of fear.”

Nayem Hassan, a doctor of Mitford Hospital, told the Dhaka Tribune that at least five to seven people were admitted at the hospital due to the injuries received during the earthquake.

On the other hand, Kholilur died of cardiac arrest during the earthquake in Rajshahi.

Motihar OC Humayun Kabir confirmed about his death to the Dhaka Tribune.

Besides, Patgram UNO Nur Kutubul Alam said Nur Islam died of cardiac arrest at the time of the earthquake in Lalmonirhat.

In Jamalpur, Sona Mia was feeling dizziness during the earthquake and fell into the floor in panic.

His elder brother Mrinal Sheikh said Sona Mia was rushed to Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty docotr declared him dead on arrival.

However, Melandoho police station OC Nasimul Islam said he did not get any information about the death.

Five people were killed and 40 others injured in the earthquake in India. The tremor was also felt in Nepal.

According to the USGS, the epicentre of the 6.7 magnitude earthquake was monitored at 351km east-northeast of Dhaka and 33km northwest of Imphal, the capital of India's Manipur state.
