Massive power theft discovered in Narayanganj buildings

The special task force of Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC) Limited yesterday unearthed massive electricity theft and tax evasion during a drive in two high-rise buildings in Narayanganj.

The buildings, one 24-storey and another 18-storey, are in Bibi Road and Nayamati areas.

In the buildings, Tk50 lakh was evaded in taxes by different dishonest means such as tampering with electricity meters to manipulate units.

The DPDC task force headed by Munir Chowdhury found out about the corruption during drives on December 31 and yesterday.

The authorities of the buildings had resorted to irregularities to evade taxes since the structures were completed in 2012.

The DPDC task force disconnected electricity connections of the buildings after the corruption was revealed and imposed a fine of Tk18 lakh.

The head of the task force, Munir, said it was an incident of massive electricity theft in the power sector. He said such large-scale theft would not have been possible without the assistance of local DPDC officials.
