The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has unearthed the source of $1m found in former state minister Lutfozzaman Babar’s account in Prime Bank’s Gulshan branch.
The ACC found that the money was transferred to the account from the US by Babar’s younger brother Golam Rabbani.
“We are now looking for Rabbani to interrogate him about this,” said an ACC official requesting anonymity.
The commission in its inquiry found that Rabbani, who owns Kanababa Trading Limited, issued two demand drafts in June 2006 to send the money to his brother’s account through HSBC Bank’s Singapore branch. The money was transferred in December of that year.
The inquiry was launched in June last year in accordance with the money laundering law. The inquiry officer, Mirza Zahidul Alam, said he would make no comment on the inquiry.
