Post-polls violence kills 1

A day after the municipal elections, polls-related violence killed at least one person and injured over 20 people in separate clashes across the country yesterday.

The fatality occurred during clashes at Dhulihor village in Hossainpur upazila of Kishoreganj. The deceased, 50-year-old Kashem Miah, was a supporter of the local defeated councillor contestant Wasim.

Kashem along with at least nine others were injured when a fierce clash broke out between supporters of councillor-elect Kajol and supporters of Wasim in the early hours of the day, said Nannu Mollah, officer-in-charge of Hossainpur police station.

A critically injured Kashem was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries in the morning.

After news about his death spread, further clashes broke out in the area, critically injuring two more people, reports UNB.

Meanwhile in Gopalganj, at least nine people were injured in post-election clashes.

Rival political groups chased each other and locked into clashes at places including Battala, Binapani and Miahpara areas throughout Wednesday night and yesterday. A group of agitated men also attacked and ransacked three houses of candidates-elect.

The police have arrested one person in this connection, reports BSS.

Elsewhere in Gaibandha, at least four people were injured in clashes between supporters of the winning and defeated councillor candidates of Gobindaganj municipality. The injured included the chairman of the nearby Shibpur union parishad, Touhidul Islam Shahin.

Quoting witnesses, Gobindaganj OC Mojammel Haq told our Gaibandha correspondent that the dispute was triggered when defeated candidate Antu Miah led his supporters to vandalise the shop of a supporter of councillor-elect Jobaidur Rahman yesterday.
