Wednesday’s municipal elections saw a 73.92% voter turnout, the Election Commission has said.
Out of 234 municipalities that saw elections take place, the EC has so far received results of 214 municipalities, while election was suspended in Narsingdi’s Madhabdi and results in 19 others remain pending because voting in 39 polling centres of those municipalities were cancelled.
EC Secretary Sirajul Islam made the disclosure while talking to reporters yesterday at his office in EC secretariat.
Among the received results, Awami League’s mayoral candidates won in 168 municipalities including seven uncontested wins, the BNP won in 19 municipalities, Jatiya Party won in one and independent candidates won in 26 municipalities.
In these 214 municipalities, a total 4,481,760 out of 6,063,719 registered voters cast their ballots. If cancelled votes are taken into account, the final voting tally stands at 4,402,835.
EC Deputy Secretary Shamsul Alam said the highest turnout for a municipality was 92% and the lowest was 47%.
Meanwhile, the EC yesterday sent letters to returning officials, telling them to announce results of the suspended municipality polls after getting the commission’s permission.
The returning officials were also instructed to send letters to the EC if they thought re-election was needed in their respective municipalities.
Sources said the EC would ask explanation from returning officials, police superintendents and deputy commissioners of eight municipalities on why voting had to be suspended in those municipalities.
