The government has extended the deadline to collect retro-reflecting digital number plate with radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags for motor vehicles by three months
A gazette notification was issued yesterday by Road Transport and Highways Division in this regard.
According the notification, automobile owners will have to collect these plates issued for them by Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) within March 31.
In October this year, the government had set December 31 as the deadline.
“A number of automobile owners had demanded an extension of the deadline. It will be the last chance to install the RFID tag. If a motor vehicle fails to collect the RFID tags within this time period, it will not be allowed to run anywhere in the nation from the first day of April,” said BRTA Secretary Shawkat Ali.
The hi-tech licence plates were launched by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2012.
RFID-tagged retro-reflective license plates will help identify a vehicle and also help in eliminating the use of fake plates on vehicles
According to the BRTA database, as of August this year, 2,307,957 registered vehicles are plying across the nation.
However, the number of non-registered vehicles is almost double, according to the Passengers Welfare Association.
