Clash over polls kills 1 in Satkania

A person has been killed in gunshot exchange between supporters of two Awami League commissioner candidates during the ongoing municipal elections in Satkania, Chittagong.

The deceased is Nurul Alam, 40.

Police Super Hafiz Akhter said: “The supporters of commissioner candidate Monirul Islam and Mozzamel Hoque locked into a clash following the election in front of Satkania Government College polling centre on Wednesday morning.

"At a stage, the supporters opened fire at each other that left Nurul dead."

Elections to 234 municipalities are underway amid allegation of vote rigging and occupation of polling centres by ruling party men.

Polling in at least 10 centres has been suspended in face of rigging allegation and clashes.

At least 13 mayor candidates from AL, BNP, Jatiya Party, independent and Awami League rebel have boycotted the elections across the country raising allegation of desperate vote rigging.
