Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad has said congenial and peaceful atmoshere is still prevailing across the country for holding the much hyped first ever partisan municipal polls on Wednesday.
Just one day before the municipal election, the CEC said this on Tuesday while briefing to journalists at media centre of Election Secretariat in the capital’s Agargaon.
“Except for some stray incidents, the congenial and peaceful environment is prevailing throughout the country to hold the polls to 234 municipalities under the political banner for the first time in the country ,” said Kazi Rakib.
He mentioned that the EC has taken effective measures against those who have violated electoral codes and conducts.
The EC has showcased seven MPs on charges of violating electoral codes, he cited.
Moreover, the EC has realized a total of Tk10,26,300 from 191 persons as fine and four people have been sent to jail for breaching electoral codes and conducts, he continued.
Kazi Rakib said executive and judicial magistrates have started to carry on their duties from Monday and they will be kept on duties till Thursday.
He sought cooperation from all political parties, media men to hold the polls in a free, fair and transparent manner.
The CEC uttered warning of taking stern action against any person involved in carrying out election duty if he or she violates and shows relax on taking lawful measures during the polls.
Nobody will be spared irrespective of their political affiliations in taking legal action if incidents of violence are created or electoral codes are violated, he also warned.
