Bangladesh Cricket Board has made a profit of approximately Tk250m from the third edition of the Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20, informed board president Nazmul Hasan yesterday.
In the previous two editions in 2012 and 2013, BCB suffered a loss of around Tk200m, mainly due to the payment irregularity by the franchises and Game On Sports management.
“We had many challenges to tackle before holding the third BPL. Removing the old franchises to bring in new ones was one of the big challenges but we had done that and you can see the changes. The tournament was played in the right spirit, there is hardly any issue with the payment as all the teams are meeting the deadlines. The best thing is Chittagong [Vikings] and Comilla [Victorians] have already made the full payment, they didn’t wait for the deadline,” said Nazmul.
He further added that 65 foreign cricketers and six overseas support staff (coaches and physiotherapist) worked in the BPL this year and all left the country happy. Nazmul said the number of franchises and venues will also be increased in the next edition.
However, the T20 tournament did encounter a few unwanted situations, one of which was the altercation between Chittagong captain Tamim Iqbal and Sylhet Super Stars franchise owner Azizul Islam.
BCB chief Nazmul said a prompt decision on the issue was not possible during the tournament, “But the disciplinary committee has looked into the matter and I am informed that a primary report has been submitted. The board will reach the needed decision in its next board meeting (in January).”
