7 die as bus plunges into ditch

At least seven day labourers were killed and seven others injured as a truck fell into a roadside ditch at Yeangcha in Lama upazila, Bandarban yesterday morning.

The deceased were M Aftab Hossain, 55, M Amjad Hossain, 45, M Robin, 32, M Rajib, 40, Alek Hossain, 2, and Rakib Hasan, 32, residents of Ishwardi upazila in Pabna and Hasan Ali, 45, a resident of Satkhira.

The accident took place when a Lama-bound truck carrying materials of a cell phone tower fell into a roadside ditch at about 7:30am and turned turtle as its driver lost control over the steering, leaving four people dead on the spot and 10 others injured, said officer-in-charge of Lama police station Mohammad Iqbal Hossain.

Later, three people were killed after taken to Lama upazila health complex.

The remaining injured labourers were admitted to Cox’s Bazar General Hospital from where two of them were shifted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital as their condition deteriorated. OC Iqbal said: “The accident took place due to dense fog.”

The bodies were sent to Bandarban Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. A case was filed in this connection.

Meanwhile, two people were killed and another injured as a bus hit a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Borokanta area of Debidwar upazila, Comilla in the morning. The deceased could not be identified immediately.

Abdul Awal, officer-in-charge of Moynamoti Highway police station, said the accident took place on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in the area around 7am when the Chittagong-bound ‘Unique Paribahan’ bus hit the auto-rickshaw, leaving two people dead on the spot and the auto-rickshaw driver injured.

The injured was admitted to Comilla Medical College Hospital.
