1 killed in Ruposhi Bangla metal shade collapse

A worker has died and 14 others injured when a metal shade of an under-construction building of Hotel Ruposhi Bangla collapsed on them.

The deceased is Altaf Hossain, 40, while the injured are-- Jakirul, 26, Alam, 32, Shafin, 19, Prodip, 20, Sayem, 35, Abdullah, 30, Fazlu Mia, 32, Ripon, 32, Moznu, 32 and Moktar Hossain, 38.

Ramna Model police station OC Masiure Rahman said: "The incident occurred around 12:45am Wednesday while the moulding works were underway in one part of the building."

Being informed, Fire Service personnel rushed to the spot and took 15 injured people to Dhaka Medical college Hospital, where duty doctors declared Altaf dead.

The injured are undergoing treatment at the DMCH. Condition of three of the injured is stated to be critical, said police.

State-owned five star hotel Ruposhi Bangla, previously known as Hotel Sheraton, was closed in September, 2014, for 16 months for renovation purpose.

The country’s one of the oldest hotels will remain shut for the entire renovation work with a cost of above US$43m before it begins its new journey as InterContinental Dhaka from January, 2016.
