One remanded over Nirob's death

A Dhaka court has placed a person on a two-day remand over the death of Ismail Hossain Nirob, who died after falling in a manhole in the capital’s Shyampur on December 8.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Rashed Talukder passed the order on Tuesday afternoon after the IO of the case produced Shahriar Ahmed alias Sukkur Mia, a caretaker of all manholes and sewerage lines in Shyampur union parishad, before his court with a seven-day remand plea.

Shyampur-Kadamtali Shilpa Malik Samity appointed Sukur Mia as the caretaker of all manholes and sewerage lines in the area.

Earlier on Sunday, Kadamtali police station SI Md Shaiful Islam filed the case under under section 304 (ka) and 34/192 of the Penal Code while Sukur was arrested on Monday on charge of culpable homicide.

Culpable homicide is a specific offence which involves the illegal killing of a person either with or without an intention to kill.

A lawyer on Monday filed a writ petition with the High Court seeking Tk30 lakh in compensation for the family of Nirob.

Chairman of Children Charity Foundation Abdul Halim filed the petition and the court is likely to hear it Tuesday.

Five-year-old Nirob fell in the manhole in the afternoon and his body was found more than four hours later at Shyampur Bazar sluice gate.
