HC questions construction of Wari kitchen market

The High Court yesterday issued a ruling seeking explanations in four weeks why the construction of a kitchen market in a residential area near Baldha Garden in the capital’s Wari area should not be declared illegal.

The bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo issued the ruling in response to a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Masud Ahmed Sayeed challenging the construction of the market.

The petitioner’s lawyer, Muktadir Rahma, said an English daily on August 23 reported that the kitchen market was actually built on a widely-used road and the road was leased to some local influential Awami League leaders.

“The construction violated the Government Estates Manual,” he said.

Dhaka South City Corporation leased the road for constructing the kitchen market, which has 44 shops.
