Kamal: Facebook to be unblocked soon

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said the government will soon unblock popular social media networking site Facebook.

He made the statement after a meeting with the Facebook authorities at the secretariat on Sunday.

The minister said they had a fruitful meeting the authorities of Facebook.

He said: “We have told them about our security issues and they have assured us of their assistance.

“We [government] will soon unblock Facebook.”

When asked about the exact date, Kamal said: "We have just talked to Facebook officials today [Sunday]. We will sit in a meeting with the law enforcement agencies and if they say everything is fine, we will unblock it."

Earlier in the day, Kamal, State Minister for Post and Telecommunications Tarana Halim and State Minister for ICT Division Zunaid Ahmed Palak hold a meeting with the social media authorities.

Facebook's South Asian Public Policy Manager Deepali Liberhan and Legal Consultant Vikram Langeh represented Facebook. 

On November 18, the government blocked Facebook, WhatsApp and Viber, citing security reasons after the Supreme Court rejected review petitions by war criminals SQ Chowdhury and Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid.
