Nomination paper submission deadline ends today

The deadline for submitting nomination papers for contesting the upcoming municipal elections across the country will end at 5pm today.

According to the election schedule, the nomination papers will be scrutinised on December 5 and 6, while the last date for the withdrawal of candidature is December 13.

A total of 235 municipalities across the country will go to polls on December 30.

The schedule was announced by Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad on November 24 while schedules for two more municipalities - Sreepur of Gazipur and Naohata of Rajshahi – were announced later.

But polls in Mongla municipality of Bagerhat were later postponed by court.

Krishak Sramik Janata League, meanwhile, announced yesterday that it would boycott the elections.

Election Commissioner Brig Gen (retd) Md Zabed Ali said the Election Commission would be in complete control of the countrywide municipal elections.

“In the elections, we do not want to see the recurrence of any mistake we might have made in the past,” he told reporters at his office at the EC Secretariat in the capital.
