‘Bangladesh wants to take a lead in global disaster management’

Relief and Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowhdury Maya yesterday said Bangladesh was producing skilled  manpower and collecting modern rescue equipment as it wanted to take a lead to disaster management sector in the world.

The minister also said Bangladesh had achieved remarkable successes to reduce death toll in disaster-prone areas over the last couple of decades and the extent of damage of properties were also minimised.

The minister made the comments while handing over four search and rescue boats and 12 small marine boats in Chittagong’s Coast Guard East Zone Base.

The minister said the Relief and Disaster Management Ministry had taken a project name Emergency Cyclone Recovery and Restoration Project after cyclone Sidr in 2007.

Presided over by Director General Riaz Ahmed of Directorate Disaster Management, the programme was attended by Secretary of disaster Ministry Md Shah Kamal, Bangladesh Coast Guard East Zone’s Zonal Commander Captain M Shahidul Islam and deputy commissioners of 12 districts.
