IFC launches campaign to promote solar energy

International Finance Corporation (IFC) is going to launch a campaign to promote solar energy in Bangladesh.

The campaign will start from December 6 and continue for one year and will cover about 6,000 to 8,000 villages in the country, said Muhammad Taif Ul Islam, programme manager of Lighting Asia Bangladesh chapter.

He said under the campaign programme they are planning to sell half a million solar products by 2017.

Lighting Asia Bangladesh chapter was inaugurated October last year.

Six private companies will display their solar products in the campaign, Taif said.

He said price range of the solar products between Tk700 and Tk21,000.

“The lowest solar product will cost you Tk700 and with the equipment one can light one bulb,” he added.

Citing statistics, he said it takes at least Tk10 kerosine to light a lamp and for a month it costs a household Tk300.

“If the household buys one solar product at Tk700, he will get his return within three months,” he added.
