Bangladesh, Bhutan for Indian consent on power import

Both Bangladesh and Bhutan are now eagerly waiting for getting a positive nod form Indian side to allow its territory for importing electricity from Bhutan.

As the Indian authority had earlier also made the same request for importing power from Bhutan, Delhi is yet to agree on a Bangladesh proposal to import electricity from Bhutan through Indian territory.

This was disclosed at a two-day Commerce Secretary-level joint meeting between Bangladesh and Bhutan, which began in the capital yesterday.

Senior Secretary of the Bangladesh Commerce Ministry Hedayetullah Al Mamoon and Economic Affairs Secretary of Bhutan Dasho Yeshi Wangdi are leading their respective delegations at the meeting being held at Bangladesh Foreign Trade Institute at Karwan Bazar. At the joint meeting, both the two countries discussed the regional connectivity, transit, tariff and non-tariff barriers and hydro-electricity issues.

Bangladesh and Bhutan will jointly take initiative to get Indian consent for electricity import from Bhutan, according to a meeting source. During the meeting, Bangladesh Power Division and Bhutanese authority will sign two MoUs for the import of the electricity.
