Covered van driver killed in police firing

Driver of a covered van has been killed when police opened fire at the vehicle in Chukndia area under Dumuria upazila in Khulna.

The identity of the deceased could not be ascertained immediately. 

Ten policemen have also been injured when the covered van collided with a police vehicle and turned turtle in the area. The accident took place when the APBn members were chasing the covered van.

The injured have been taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital.

Dumuria OC Moshiar Rahman said: “The covered van collided with a microbus carrying the members of Armed Police Battalion (APBn) and turned turtle on Tuesday morning, killing one on the spot and injuring the others.”

He, however, said two bullet marks were spotted on the deceased's body.

APBn Commanding Officer in Khulna Shahidul Islam said the APBn members fired three rounds of bullets at the covered van as the driver of the vehicle did not stop it despite repeated signal.

"One person of the covered van was killed when the vehicle turned turtle after the microbus carrying the APBn members came in front of it to put barricade," he said.
