The drug traders of the premier port city have enforced a strike keeping their businesses shut and demanding release of the arrested drugstores’ staffs.
The drug traders under the banner of Bangladesh Chemists and Druggists Association observed the strike from Sunday morning to noon.
SK Shikder, President of Chittagong chapter of Bangladesh Chemists and Druggists Association told the Dhaka Tribune that they did not have objection to conducting mobile court against the errant drugstores.
“But, in the name of conducting mobile courts, the administration is harassing the drug traders. The Ansar members of the mobile court on that day seized some legal medicines along with the illegal ones. We are enforcing the strike protesting at the arrest of our 12 men,” added the leader of the drug traders.
On November 24, a mobile court also fined two errant drugstores with Tk 10,000 in total and seized two cartons of medicines meant for physician samples during the drive.
The mobile court led by Executive Magistrate Ruhul Amin came under attack at KC Dey Road adjacent to Hazari Lane under Kotwali police station in the city.
Following the attack, the police arrested 12 people on charge of being involved with the assault and a case was lodged against 212 people with Kotwali police station in the city on November 25.
Later, a Chittagong court sent 12 assaulters, who launched an attack on the mobile court, to jail.
