Name of A Sabur road yet to be changed despite HC ruling

The authorities of Khulna City Corporation yet to take any effective measure to change the name of Khan A Sabur Road to its old name Jessore Road despite a ruling of the High Court.

On November 3, the High Court ordered the authorities of Khulna City Corporation to give back Jessore Road its old name which is now named after Muslim League leader Khan A Sabur. The High Court bench comprising justices–Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman–gave the order after their attention was grabbed to a newspaper report. The court ordered to take measures to change the name within three days.

During a city roundup this corespondent found that name of road on most of shops, business establishments and houses have not been changed.

Leaders of Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee Khulna chapter yesterday met acting mayor of the KCC Anisur Rahman Biswas to draw his attention over the issue.

During the meeting, the leaders told the mayor that was unfortunate that the city corporation could not take any measure to give back the road its old name.

Anisur Rahman Biswas said: “We have already informed city dwellers through loudspeaker to change the name of road from their signboard or holding numbers immediately.”

He said the city corporation would conduct a drive tomorrow and take actions against city residents who did not change the name of the road.

“The city corporation will take action if anyone disobey High Court’s verdict,” the mayor said. The KCC mayor assured the leaders that he would look into the matter and take effective measures to give back the road its old name. 

The meeting was addressed among others by President of Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee Dr Baharul Alam, its General Secretary Mahendra Nath Sen, leader of Krisok League Central Commitee Shyamal Singha Roy.

Baharul Alam also urged the authorities to change the name of institution which has been named after A Sabur Kahn.

Paromol Ghosh, proprietor of Ridoy Electronics located at Dakbanglamor, told the Dhaka Tribune that they were informed about the matter and take steps to change the name. 

Sadekul Hira, manager of Sundarban Paint and Hardware located at Ferryghatmor, said they had already blured the name of the road with black colour and soon change the name.

Earlier, the court also ordered the city authorities to change the name of Khan A Sabur Road as Jessore Road, as it was previously without any delay. The court then asked the Khulna City Corporation mayor to submit a report on actions which it takes on the issue within seven days.

Khan A Sabur, a minister during Ayub Khan’s regime, was a collaborator of the Pakistani Army during Liberation War in 1971.
