Govt, ADB sign deal on use of surface water in Dhaka

The government has signed an agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for $1 million in grant for technical assistance in promoting sustainable use of surface water in the capital.

The government of Japan is financing the technical assistance through the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction, reported UNB. The ADB will administer the fund and provide technical support for project implementation. Mitsutake Numahata, counsellor at the Embassy of Japan in Dhaka, was present on the occasion.

“Securing adequate amount and good quality surface water is vital for Dhaka’s development, as the groundwater table is falling rapidly,” said ADB Country Director Kazuhiko Higuchi.
