Govt orders blocking Facebook, WhatsApp, Viber
The government has ordered blocking popular social media platform Facebook and online messaging and calling services WhatsApp and Viber.
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) issued a letter to different telecom operators and all Internet Service Providers, asking them to stop the services immediately.
SC upholds Salauddin's death penalty
The Supreme Court has upheld its previous verdict on BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, rejecting his plea for reviewing death penalty for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha passed the order on Wednesday morning.
SC upholds Mujahid's death penalty
The Supreme Court has upheld its previous verdict on convicted war criminal and also Jamaat-e-Islami leader Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mujahid, rejecting his plea for reviewing death penalty.
The four-member apex court bench led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha confirmed the capital punishment of the 69-year-old Jamaat leader on Wednesday, who served as social welfare minister (technocrat) during the BNP-Jamaat alliance’s 2001-06 tenure.
Italian priest shot in Dinajpur
Unidentified miscreants have shot an Italian priest in Dinajpur on Wednesday, around one and a half months into another Italian citizen Cesare Tavella's murder in Dhaka's Gulshan area.
The victim is Piero, 50, a physician of Suihari Catholic Mission Church, reported UNB.
AG: Execution is a matter of time
Pointing at the rejection of review plea of war crimes convicts Salauddin Quader Chowhdury and Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mujahid, Attorney General (AG) Mahbube Alam has said there is no barrier to the execution of death verdicts and it may take place in a matter of time.
“SQ Chy is the only man who has been awarded with the death penalty for the massacre on the intellectuals at the last phase of the 1971 Liberation War. The countrymen and the prosecution are happy at both verdicts. Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha told me getting the rejection copy of review plea is not mandatory to implement the execution,” AG Mahbube Alam said.
Prosecution: Justice has been done
International Crimes Tribunal prosecutor Tureen Afroz has termed upholding the death penalty for war crimes convicts Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mujahid a great triumph to the humanity.
“Many plots were active to foil the verdict move putting the country's sovereignty at threat. Amid the final verdict, it has been proved that none is above the law,” Tureen said immediately after the verdicts were given.
2 Air France flights diverted due to bomb threats
Two Air France flights were diverted Tuesday night because of bomb threats, officials said.
Both flights landed safely.
Bomb threat cancels Germany-Netherlands soccer match
"Serious plans for explosions" forced the evacuation of a stadium in Hannover, Germany, on Tuesday night before a Netherlands-Germany friendly soccer match, the police chief for Germany's Lower Saxony region told Germany's public broadcaster NDR.
Chief Volker Kluwe told NDR that authorities "had concrete intelligence that someone wanted to set off an explosive device inside the stadium." The two tips forced officials to cancel the Netherlands-Germany match about 90 minutes before kickoff.
