Hasan Azizul Huq receives death threat

Noted writer and scholer, Hasan Azizul Huq, has received death threat on his mobile phone on Sunday.

The former professor of Rajshahi University’s Philosophy Department received the phone call around 4:30pm, said his daughter-in-law Sultana Razia.

Quoting her father-in-law, Razia told the Dhaka Tribune: “The unknown caller asked my father-in-law whether he will continue like this or he wants to change himself.”

In reply, the famous short story writer said now at this age, he cannot change himself and he also does not want to do so, added Razia. “Then the caller asked him to remain prepared for any consequences.”

The call was probably made from abroad as the caller's number on the mobile phone was displayed as “unknown,” Razia further said.

Earlier in 2006, the professor received a death threat from Islami Chhatra Shibir which sparked a widespread protest and condemnation.

OC Humayun Kabir of Motihar police told our Staff- reporter Kamrul Hasan: “I met Professor Hasan Azizul Huq after learning of the death threat and collected all details.”

No GD has been filed yet, however, the police took the matter seriously, added the OC.

The incident took place in less than a week after Professor Emeritus Anisuzzaman received similar threat on his mobile phone in the form of a text message, which he reported with the police station.

He also said that the text message was written in flawless English. It criticised him for supporting the bloggers and asked whether he wanted to get killed.
