Taiwanese burglary victims flown home for treatment

An elderly Taiwanese couple who were attacked during a burglary in the capital’s Uttara neighbourhood on November 6 have been flown to Taipei, a source close to the family said.

Businessman Wang Ming Chee, 68, and his wife 60-year-old wife Lili Hawa were flown to Taipei in an air ambulance on Thursday night after Taiwanese doctors suggested Wang be repatriated to receive better treatment for his head injury.

Wang, a fifteen-year resident of Bangladesh,  was struck on the forehead with a stick during the break-in. His wife was also wounded as she tried to resist the attack, police said.

The couple were being treated at Apollo Hospital in Dhaka.

“He [Wang] was flown along with his wife around 11:30pm [on Thursday] after a medical team from Taiwan recommended better treatment for his head injury,” said the family friend, asking not to be identified.

The friend said Wang underwent surgery in his native country on Friday.

The couple’s son, Wang Chin Tha Alex, is currently looking after the family business in Bangladesh.

A Taiwanese medical team arrived in Dhaka to examine Wang and his wife after the unconscious sexagenarian showed no sign of improvement.

The couple came under attack early on November 6 during what police described as a robbery by people known to the couple.

Of the three attackers, two were former employees doing sub-contracting work for their former employer and one was a current employee, police said.

Police said they had arrested the employee, Jahangir, but had not made any arrests since then.

Apollo Hospital Duty Manager Mofijul Islam said Wang’s condition remained unchanged from the time he had been admitted until he was airlifted out on Thursday night.

Police said the robbery was carried out by two former employees and a current employee of Wang using a duplicate key to steal Tk6 lakh withdrawn from a bank on November 5.

The police asked the officials of the Wang’s PVC product factory, Xin Xing Yang in Gazipur, not to speak to media for the sake of the investigation.
