Hunt on for six suspects seen on CCTV footage

After analysing the security camera footage from the Aziz Supermarket, investigators are now looking for six suspects in publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan’s murder.

A senior DMP Detective Branch official, on condition of anonymity, told the Dhaka Tribune they used footage from two of the market’s eight CCTV cameras to make a list of around 3,000 people who were near the crime scene at the time of the murder.

Among those on the list, the movement of at least six individuals were identified as suspicious. At least one of those six men’s face could be seen clearly in the security footage, the official said.

Nazmul Ahsan Naju, president of Aziz Supermarket Owners Association, also said the building’s security footage showed at least one suspect behaving oddly enough to arise suspicion. The same man was later seen to leave the Aziz Supermarket with four or five others.

Meanwhile, an investigator said that while scanning the crime scene they found hair in front of Dipan’s office desk that might belong to a suspect. However, a DNA test would be needed to confirm that the hair was not the victim’s.

The investigation team twice visited Dipan’s father Prof Abul Kashem Fazlul Haque yesterday to discuss progress in the murder case.

Prof Haque said the police were providing the family protection even though no added security was requested.

On October 31, Dipan was hacked to death in his Jagriti Prokashoni office on the second floor of Aziz Supermarket. His wife Razia Rahman Joly filed a case with Shahbagh police station, which was later handed over to the DB police.
