Quayum's brother Matin remanded

A Dhaka court has placed MA Matin, brother of BNP leader MA Quayum, on a eight-day remand in Italian citizen Cesare Tavella murder case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahriar Mahmud Adnan passed the order on Thursday afternoon, rejecting his bail plea.

Earlier in the day, the investigation officer of the case produced him before the court with a 10-day remand plea while Matin's lawyer sought bail for him on health grounds.

During the hearing, Matin's lawyer SM Shawkat Hossain Mia told court that the detainee's name was not mentioned in the FIR of the case.

He said: “Detective Branch (DB) of police had arrested him from in front of his house on October 20. Later, his family members also filed a general diary with Badda police station on October 27.

“He was not arrested yesterday [Wednesday] from Benapole. All these statements regarding his arrest last night are fake.”

Earlier, DMP Deputy Commissioner Muntasirul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune: “Based on information, a team of DB police conducted a drive at Benapole port area in Jessore and arrested Matin around 11:45pm Wednesday while he was preparing to leave the country.

Nearly a month after the killing, on October 25, law enforcers produced four people before the media claiming that they had killed Tavella in exchange for money from a Big Brother. In primary inquiry, it was found that Quayum had planned and financed the killing.

Matin's brother MA Quayum, former ward commissioner and BNP leader, is believed to be the mastermind in Tavella killing. DB has so far arrested four people identified as Bhagina Rasel, Chakti Rasel, Shooter Rubel, and Tamzid alias Sharif for killing Tavella on road 90 in Gulshan 2 area in the capital on September 28.
