Escaped accused killed in Jessore 'gunfight'

An alleged arms trader, who escaped from police custody on Wednesday, has been killed in a "gunfight" with police in Barpota area in Jessore.

The deceased is Ilias Mridha, 30, son of Latif Mridha of Rajbari.

Benapole port police station OC Opurbo Hasan said: “Ilias escaped from the police custody while he was being sent to Jessore court on a pickup van of Benapole port police on Wednesday afternoon. He fled when the vehicle turned turtle as it reached Kagojpukur area.”

“Police noticed Ilias while conducting a drive at Patukhali frontier around 2am Thursday. He was trying to flee on a motorcycle,” he said.

He said the criminal opened fire at the law enforcers. In retaliation, police fired back that left Ilias dead.

Meanwhile, three police officials were injured in the incident.

The OC said two revolvers and a motorcycle were seized from the spot.

Ilias was detained from Gazipur's Bottola area in possession with a pistol, two magazines and a round of bullet on Tuesday evening.
