Police yesterday filed three cases against 235 people in connection with attacks on police personnel and possession of illegal arms in Chittagong University area.
Sub-Inspector of Hathazari police Manjur Ahmed filed the case mentioning name of 55 activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League and 100 to 120 unnamed people while SI Swapan Kuman Sarkar and SI Habibur Rahman filed two arms cases naming people persons and 50 unnamed people respectively.
Officer-in-Charge (investigation) Md Salauddin Chowhdury of Hathazari police station told the Dhaka Tribune that BCL men had attacked policemen when they gone to Shahjalal and Shah Amanat dormitories to disperse clashing groups of BCL factions.
At least 30 people, including four police personnel, were injured in a fierce clash between two groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) at Chittagong University on Monday morning.
Police and witness said an altercation had ensued between supporters of Sixty Nine Group led by CU unit President Alamgir Tipu and Bijoy Group led by university unit BCL General Secretary HM Fazly Rabbi Sujon over fixing spot to stand to greet admission seekers around 10am.
At one stage of the altercation, both the groups locked into a clash. During the clash, chase and counter-chase took place between the rivals.
Hearing the news of clash, other supporters of both groups came out from Shahjalal dormitory and Shah Amanat hall and locked into clashes equipped with firearms and sharps weapons in front of Shahjalal dormitory, creating panic among guardians and aspirant students.
Later, police had raided two dormitories and recovered firearms and lethal weapons.
Three-member probe committee formed
CU authorities yesterday formed a three-member probe committee over Monday’s clash.
CU registrar (acting) Professor Kamrul Huda said: “A three-member probe committee has been formed headed by CU Assistant Proctor Helal Uddin Ahmed to investigate into the matter.”
The committee was asked to submit its report as early as possible, said Kamrul Huda.
