Mobile phone operators signed an agreement with the Election Commission yesterday to access the National Identification (NID) database to initiate biometric SIM registration.
According to the EC, the operators is likely to get the NID access from today.
The signing ceremony was held at the EC office at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital.
SIM registration with biometric identification would begin on December 16 this year to prevent criminal activities.
On October 21, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, ICT adviser to the prime minister, inaugurated the trial run of biometric SIM registration system at the secretariat.
To get NID access, each mobile operator will have to pay TK5 lakh as fee.
Earlier, the Election Commission approved signing the agreement with all the mobile operators to provide the NID access to verify their registered SIMs.
