Businessman Tajul dies in Habiganj road crash

A businessman named Tajul Islam Faruk has been killed as a truck collided head-on with his private car on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Nachharatpur area of Sadar upazila.

Shaiestaganj Highway police Officer-in-Charge Ejajur Rahman confirmed death  to the Dhaka Tribune.

Tajul vastly drew attention of the countrymen through launching an extortion case against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during the 2007 military-backed caretaker government. However, the High Court on May 30, 2010 dismissed the lawsuit.

The police official said a speeding Dhaka-bound truck from Sylhet collided head-on with the private car of Tajul Islam Faruk, former chairman of Westman Power Plant, on the highway on Tuesday morning, leaving him critically injured.

Later, he succumbed to his injuries on the way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Being infuriated at the death, locals put up barricade on a road in Nachhratpur area, which was later lifted in the face of police intervention.

Ejajur said though police seized the killer truck, its driver managed to flee the spot soon after the incident.
