22 holidays for 2016

The cabinet has approved the official calender for the year 2016 with a total of 22 public holidays. The approval came at the weekly cabinet meeting held at the Secretariat yesterday with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

A five-day holiday was proposed for celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr but the cabinet did not approve it.

Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam said the cabinet had approved 14 public holidays for the upcoming year.

“But there will be another eight holidays, which will be observed upon the government’s executive order,” he said.

Shafiul said another three days of optional leave were approved for the members of different religious communities to allow them to observe their own festivals. “Government employees of ethnic origin in Chittagong Hill Tracts will be allowed two days of additional leave along with the Bangla new year holiday.”
