An suspected criminal has been killed in a “gunfight” with the members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Bongaon area under sadar upazila in Gazipur.
The deceased is Rafiqul Islam Rafiq, 34, of Bongaon area.
RAB 1 Operation Officer ASP Akram said: “Acting on a tip-off, we have conducted a drive in the area around 1:30am Monday. Sensing our presence, the criminals opened fire at us.”
In retaliation, the RAB officials fired back that triggered a “gunfight” between them.
Later, Rafiq was found bullet wounded from the spot while the others managed to flee the scene. He was declared dead when taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital where the duty doctor declared him dead.
Meanwhile, two RAB officials --SI Nasir, 35, and Nayek Abuk Hossain, 45,-- were injured in the incident.
He said Rafiq was an accused in several cases including arms and extortion.
Hospital's Residential Officer Abdus Salam Sarkar said: “Rafiq was brought dead to the hospital. There were multiple bullet wounds on his stomach, back, chest and other parts of the body.”
