Forest bandit killed in Sundarbans 'gunfight'

The ring leader of forest bandit group Sipon Bahini has been killed in a “gunfight” with the members of Rapid Action Battalion in Mrighamari canal area of Chandpai Range in Sundarbans.

Shipon, 32, died in the “gunfight” early Wednesday. He was a resident of Jhalokati.

RAB 8 Captain Colonel Md Foridul Alam said: “Acting on a tip-off, we conducted a drive in the area around 6am. Sensing our presence, the bandits opened fire targeting us.”

In retaliation, RAB members fired back that left Shipon dead while the others fled the scene.

Meanwhile, RAB recovered 18 firearms and 339 rounds of bullets from the spot.

He said six RAB officials were injured in the incident.
