Police: Tavella murder mystery revealed

Police have claimed to reveal the mystery behind the murder of Italian citizen Tavella Caesar.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia made the disclosure in a press briefing at DB Headquarters in capital’s Mintoo Road on Monday morning.

“The killers took part in the murder on the direction of a so-called Boro Bhai [Big Brother],” said the DMP boss adding that police were trying to arrest the man.

“The Boro Bhai had asked the arrestees to kill a foreigner. When the killers asked the man whether he had any enmity with the foreigner, he replied in negative and said the motive of the murder was to put the government under pressure,” he continued.

In response to a query about militant group Islamic State’s alleged claim of the responsibility for the murder, Asaduzzaman Mia said IS drama was staged to hide the real culprits.

Earlier in the day, detectives detained four persons, including three suspected killers of Tavella Caesar from Dhaka.

The detained are Vagne Rasel, Chakti Rasel, Shooter Rubel, and Tamzid alias Sharif. They were produced during the media briefing.

The motorbike used in the killing was also seized.

Tavella, 51, was shot on road 90 in Gulshan 2 area in the capital September 27 and he was declared dead at United Hospital in the following day. He was a project director at Netherlands-based development organisation ICCO Cooperation.
