Police say they have identified the culprit who stabbed to death an on-duty assistant sub-inspector of Darus Salam police on Thursday.
“We got details of the main killer by interrogating one of his associate who was arrested from the murder spot,” said DMP Additional Commissioner (DB and prosecution) Sheikh Mohammad Maruf Hossain.
However, he added that details about the killer cannot be disclosed because of the ongoing investigation.
On Thursday evening, ASI Ibrahim Hossain Mollah, 40, was stabbed twice – in his chest and abdomen – while trying to inspect the contents of a bag being carried by three suspicious-looking young men. Ibrahim was on duty at a police checkpost in front of Gabtoli's Parbat Cinema Hall at the time.
The ASI's colleagues rushed in and managed to capture one of the fleeing suspects; his name is Masudur Rahman. The other two, including the alleged killer, are still on the run.
Ibrahim was later taken to Suhrawardi Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 9:30pm.
Selimuzzaman, officer-in-charge of Darus Salam police station, told the Dhaka Tribune that they have seized a camera from Masud's possession and have received some sensational information during an all-night interrogation session.
“The killers stabbed him [Ibrahim] thrice and the attacking style suggests that the killers were professionals,” the OC added.
Meanwhile, Ibrahim's body was taken to his native village in Bagerhat Friday following a janaza at Rajarbagh Police Line.
Speaking to journalists at the janaza, Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Haque said they were suspecting that an organised crime group which opposed the country's liberation was behind the murder; however, more investigation was needed to become sure of it, he said.
Asked about any political connection to the killing, the IGP said there was some information that needed to be analysed before making a comment.
Three more suspects have also been arrested during drives based on the information provided by the detained criminal Masud, he added.
DMP Commissioner, Asaduzzaman Miah meanwhile said explosives have been recovered during a raid in Kamrangirchar conducted based on Masud's information.
DMP Deputy Commissioner Muntasirul Islam said the Detective Branch and Rapid Action Battalion were carrying out drives to apprehend the killer, while the DB was assisting with the police investigation.
No case has been filed in this regard but it was under process, he said.
RAB's media wing director, Commander Mufti Mahmud Khan, said they were also conducting a shadow investigation for the ASI killing.
