Mina stampede: Bangladeshi death toll climbs to 137

The death toll of Bangladeshi hajj pilgrims from the tragic stampede in Saudi Arabia’s Mina has now reached 137, State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam said.

The junior minister came up with the information at a press briefing at the ministry on Sunday, reports UNB.

“Fifty-three other Bangladeshi pilgrims are still missing,” he also informed the journalists.

Shahriar said Bangladesh Ambassador to Saudi Arabia talked to media directly and updated information from time to time.

Out of 137 victims, the identities of 41 Bangladesh nationals are yet to be verified but the officials confirmed that they are Bangladeshis, he added.

Over one lakh people from Bangladesh went to Saudi Arabia to perform hajj this year.

On September 24 last, a crowd collapse caused the deaths of many people who were suffocated or crushed during the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Mina, Makkah.

On October 9, the Associated Press (AP) count showed at least 1,453 people died following the incident.
